My work incorporates an interest in the past and its relevance to the present. Using the letters, documents, books and images that remain of “what once was” my images explore the concerns, cares and boundaries of our ancestors and how these have changes, or not.
The wood panels are in the tradition of the intimate image - the small 'portrait', interior, or still life. The collaged paper provides the ground for the elements of the image.
This assembly process creates a 'painting' of stroke and layering that is more reflective of the mind’s process of image making.
The drawings incorporate my love of old paper, and the printed or handwritten history on it - the formality of the language and the involvement with issues seem at first to be either no longer relevant or are now so changed as to render the words on those pages quaint.
The motif, suggested by the words always has a relationship to the text. Whether ironic, humorous, or nostalgic the two always speak to each other.
